Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She has completed over 22 years
of employment with Jenison
Public Schools in Jenison,
Michigan, initially as a teacher
with students with autism
spectrum disorders (ASD) and in
recent years as a consultant to
students with ASD in inclusive
educational programs. In 1991,
Carol developed Social Stories
and Comic Strip Conversations.
These are strategies that are
used with children, adolescents,
and adults with ASD. She has
published several resources on
topics related to children and
adults with ASD. This presentation uses lecture, activities, and case
examples to: 1)explain why people with ASD are
often targeted by bullying attempts; 2)share the
current research related to bullying; 3)provide an
inclusive definition of bullying; 4)outline a
multifaceted approach to addressing bullying
behavior; 5) detail a step-by-step approach to
teach a child/adult with ASD to respond effectively
to an initial bullying attempt; and 6)share
information and resources to keep Internet use

and Comic Strip Conversations for many years to
effectively share social information with children,

participants to write and implement a Social
Story and conduct a Comic Strip Conversation,
provides plenty of positive and practical new ideas

| The host, Scott Nixon is the Executive Director of Lifes Plan Inc. Lifes Plan is a non-profit pooled trust that was founded by the Ray Graham Association. Lifes Plan provides trustee services in managing special needs trusts. Lifes Plan was the first pooled trust here in Illinois opened in 1986. Lifes Plan has over 20 years of experience and expertise in working with individuals with disabilities and their families. Lifes Plan fills a critical role in answering a fundamental question: Who is going to take care of my child when I am gone.
Theresa Varnet has been an advocate for persons with disabilities for over 40 years. In addition to being a lawyer, she is a certified teacher, licensed social worker and the parent of a disabled adult daughter. She has served as Social Services Director in a residential school for children with multiple disabilities, Coordinator for a Special Education Cooperative and as a Citizen Advocacy/ Disability Rights Coordinator. Theresa will discuss steps parents need to take at various stages of a special needs child's life. Upon entering the school system parents need to understand their child's right to a free and appropriate public education. Upon leaving public schools parents need to be aware of how to access adult services, guardianship and less intrusive alternatives to guardianship, eligibility for SSI and Medicaid and why these programs are so critical to a young person's future vocational and residential options.
