| 2009 Disability Pride Parade |
Date: 7/25/2009 |
| This year's theme - Disabled and Proud 2009: Changing to Pride. Online registration is now open at www.disabilityprideparade.org for the 6th Annual Disability Pride Parade, set for Saturday, July 25, 2009, in downtown Chicago. An estimated 7,000 people, floats, and vehicles representing a wide variety of disability and other organizations will march and roll from the Harold Washington Library to Daley Plaza – all in celebration of the theme: Disabled and Proud 2009: Changing to Pride.
The parade is a grass-roots effort, organized completely by people with disabilities. This year’s Grand Marshal is Disability Activist and Feminist Amber Smock. Smock is Co-Coordinator for Chicago ADAPT and consults with the ADAPT National Youth Summit. Along with a core group of dedicated women, Smock co-founded Feminist Response in Disability Activism (FRIDA), a grassroots direct action group of women with disabilities and Deaf women. With FRIDA, Amber has helped coordinate national advocacy campaigns such as with the American Medical Association on the case of Ashley X. In 2008, Amber received the Founder’s Award from the Chicago Foundation for Women in recognition of her emerging leadership, and with the award money has met with women in over 30 disability organizations in eleven cities across four countries.
People can register to march in the Disability Pride Parade online at our website: www.disabilityprideparade.org or call our toll-free number, 1-866-260-5812 for assistance.
