Special Olympics
Special Olympics is another organization specifically designed to meet the recreation
needs of people with disabilities. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training
and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental
retardation and closely related developmental disabilities by giving them continuing
opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and
participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes and the community. For additional information about
opportunities in your area through Special Olympics Illinois, see their website at www.ilso.org.
