Statewide Information Resource & Referral for Advocacy & Service for People with Developmental Disabilities

Inclusion/Least Restrictive Environment

These terms refers to the concept that students with disabilities should be included in the classroom setting that is the least restrictive environment for them to learn. This comes from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. For further information about inclusion and least restrictive environment, or LRE, in Illinois, see the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) page on LRE.

Early Choices – A Preschool LRE Initiative of the ISBE has the following mission: The Early CHOICES Preschool LRE Initiative promotes increasing high quality inclusive education for each and every preschool aged child.

Another piece of information that may be helpful in understanding LRE is a memo from Christopher Koch, Ed.D, a past Director of Special Education Services for ISBE on determining LRE. Click here to see that memo on the Illinois State Board of Education website.
